Why Take the Path to Becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner?

In 2019, Massachusetts became the first state to mandate dementia education for all physicians, physician assistants, and nurses.  Governor Baker included acute care hospitals in this law.  The hospitals are required to come up with a plan on how they are going to best care for patients with dementia.  In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what profession you are in, if you work with adults in any capacity, you unequivocally need to understand dementia.

The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) has developed curriculum that is updated regularly with new information, research, and facts.  This education is known as the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care seminar.  The major benefit of this training is increasing your knowledge and increasing competency.  The additional benefits to you are the opportunity to build your resume and credentials by becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner; as well as obtaining continuing education credits offered.  Upon completion of this one-day seminar, the attendee may apply with the NCCDP in order to obtain credentials as a Certified Dementia Practitioner.

As a Dementia Specialist I develop my own curriculum for staff training and CEU programs; however, I am a trainer for NCCDP offering the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care seminar monthly live in-person.  I now also offer this course live online in the event your location prohibits you from attending in-person. I offer twenty-four years of stories, experiences, practices, and passion in each of my seminars.

I am grateful for the positive feedback I receive from the attendees.  These attendees include: nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, home health aides, homemakers, case managers, companions, volunteers, social workers, hospice workers, home care workers, assisted living staff, memory care staff, nursing home staff, mental health clinicians, research professionals, activity professionals, therapeutic recreation specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, dental professionals, etc.

My blog from May 2019 explains how dementia education can most definitely improve your service outcomes.  Investing in dementia education will undoubtedly increase the quality of life for the people you serve.

Providing the opportunity for your staff to attend and obtain their credentials as Certified Dementia Practitioners increases their sense of confidence when working with people living with dementia.  They will be skilled in de-escalation techniques, redirection through validation and empathy; along with, strategies and interventions to establish successful communication.  This will lead to a decrease in power struggles, a decrease in unmet needs, and a decrease in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.  Staff will be empowered to utilize the most successful ways to care for a person living with dementia and less likely to resort to calling 911.

Having a team of Certified Dementia Practitioners instills confidence in your facility for the community, families, and caregivers.  When a family is deciding to secure your support services, they are comparing many offering similar services.  Knowing that your team has these credentials will guide the consumer to choose you.

The cost of to register to attend the required seminar is $225.00 per person.  The cost of the application to NCCDP in order to receive your credentials as a Certified Dementia Practitioner is $135.00.  There is a significant discount for organizations investing in 3 or more staff to attend the same seminar.  The discount reduces the registration fee to $200.00 per person and reduces the application fee to only $35.00 per person.  The savings is $125.00 per person.

I offer private CDP seminars for your organization.  I will come to your location and deliver the private CDP seminar at a reduced rate per person.  Please contact me for scheduling and pricing information.

Whether you are at the beginning of your career, a very seasoned healthcare professional, or lead a team of healthcare professionals, continuing education and credentialing are beneficial to you and the people you serve.
